A new inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine has been developed for use on small passenger cars. New technologies adopted to reduce costs and improve performance include a plastic air intake module with an electronic throttle chamber, continuously variable valve timing control (C-VTC), a fine spray fuel injector and a catalyst substrate with a low heat mass. This new engine ranks among the best in its class in providing an optimum balance of power, torque and fuel economy. It also complies with the J-ULEV requirements of Japanese new exhaust emission regulations. This paper describes the major technological features of the new engine.

When designing and evaluating software architectures and network facilities for hosting demanding distributed applications, taking performance considerations into account is essential. A key factor in assessing the performance of such a distributed system is the network latency and its relation to the application behaviour. In this respect, it is important to include the performance impact of the network into the performance models used during the entire design cycle of the system.A framework is proposed that allows to model both the software and the network components separately and extracts a single set of performance estimates for the entire system. This has the advantage of allowing the network and software aspects to be modeled separately using the modeling languages and tools most suited to those system aspects. A case study is presented to illustrate the use of the framework and its usefulness in predicting system performance.

We describe our recent research applying performance test-bed generation techniques to service-oriented architectural models as an advance on the state of the art in performance engineering of service-oriented software. We outline our related research on tools for business process composition, performance engineering and dynamic system architectures.
